A blocked vent or a failed cycling or high-limit thermostat lets the dryer run too hot. Stop using it until it has been checked.
Burning smell or dryer too hot to touch? Stop the cycle, unplug the dryer and, on a gas model, turn off the gas supply valve. Do not run it again until it has been checked: lint build-up is one of the most common causes of dryer fires.

If airflow is good and drying is still slow, a weak element, a cycling thermostat or a moisture sensor is usually to blame.
